Why China?

Why are we adopting from China?

  • Asia is home to the largest number of orphaned children in the world: 60 million at last count
  • China is one of two countries with the highest rates of early childhood mortality
  • 29.8% of the population lives on under $2 a day, representing around 387 million people
  • Poverty is a major cause of child abandonment
  • Most families have only one child.  Although the one-child-per-family policy (developed in 1979 and somewhat revised since then), has been relaxed, families feel compelled to abandon children they cannot support or that would not be able to support them because of fines and other consequences.  A high number of child abandonments are children that have special needs.
